Matthew Harris Obituary

“Giving thanks today, tomorrow and always for our precious and loved son, Matthew Oliver Harris.”

Matthew Oliver Harris, the only child born to Ronnie D. and Deboraha Jackson Harris on March 31, 1987 in Birmingham.  His grandparents, all deceased were The Reverend Elias and Mrs. Elizabeth DeVelle Jackson and Mr. James Oliver and Mrs. Ruth Wilder Harris.

He was a member of the Saint John A.M.E. Church (downtown)and served as an acolyte, member of the Sunday School, youth choir and the YPD.

He was educated in the public schools of Hoover, AL  (Rocky Ridge and Greystone Elementary Schools, Berry Middle and Spain Park High School).  He graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a Bachelor of Science in Health Care Management in 2010. He worked at several jobs in and out of his field over the last several years.

Matthew was an amazing, smart young man with a kind spirit.  He loved family, enjoyed meeting people and having lively conversations on a wide range of topics from sports to politics. He loved to cook, but always too much!  Some of his favorite   times were family gatherings.  Holidays with breakfast at Uncle Robert and Aunt Merline’s, Christmas dinner at Uncle William and Aunt Babymae’s, his Momma’s Thanksgivings, his Uncle Claude and Aunt Dru Fourth of July Celebration and just laid-back times with “Mu Dear” eating cobblers, fishing with granddaddy and daddy, drinking “sweet tea” with Grandma Ruth, and candy and soda with Aunt Sarah. He was always concerned about others especially his parents and “Aunt Ruby”. You would frequently hear him say, “I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have such a “good family”.

He was an avid sports fan, loved Alabama Football and traveling to various cities across the United States to attend a major league baseball games. He played baseball from age 5-13 years old with the Hoover baseball league and football from 6th through 10th grade, playing on the Berry Championship team in 7th grade.
