Mr. Freddie Lee Murphy “Tom” was born November 9, 1939 in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Frank and Cordelia Murphy. He confessed Christ at an early age and became a member of Twenty-Third Street Baptist Church and later became a member of Nichols Temple A.M.E. Church.
Freddie moved to Newark, New Jersey and lived there for twenty-five years. He married Gwendolyn Diane Champion Murphy on July 15, 1991 after being with her since 1973. they remained together until his passing.
Freddie was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Cordelia Murphy; brothers, Bernard Murphy, Willie Frank Murphy and Michael Joseph Murphy; and sister, Rosa Nell McCafferty.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory: three sons, two daughters of Birmingham, Alabama; fifteen grandchildren, four brothers, Ernest Lee of Columbia, Maryland, James Elvin of Fort Deposit, Alabama, Charles Murphy of Birmingham, Alabama, and Theodore Murphy of Birmingham, Alabama; two sisters, Sarah Victoria Robinson of Southfield, Michigan, and Eleanor Murphy of Clay, Alabama; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
